A Note From The Top Ch...Ch...Ch...Changes Don Henson, President
Over the course of our 14 year existence, many things have evolved and changed. We’ve switched venues, become a non-profit organization, and most of us have become much better songwriters. We’ve gained members, lost members, and forged new friendship. Some of us have even formed new bands!
Our board members are excited to see even more positive changes are on the horizon. We want our Circle to become THE organization that people think of when you say the word “songwriter.” Some of you on our mailing list are former members, some attended a meeting or two, and many of you simply haven’t made it to a monthly meeting. We invite you to drop by the next meeting or two to see the changes we’re making. We welcome your input and ideas on how we can continue to make our meetings, our music, and ourselves better.
We’d like you to be part of the excitement.

In 2001 he wrote the songs for the Broadway show, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In addition, our own Ken Moody-Arndt has two shows slated for August. On the 12th he’ll be at Coffee Corners in Burton, a very pleasant coffee shop and antique store, starting at 7 PM. On the 19th he’ll be playing at Nature’s Oasis 15613 Detroit in Lakewood. That show starts at 11 AM and runs until 1 PM. Both shows are free and open to the public.

Many, many people spend their lives asking the important questions that have mystified us for eons. “What is the essence of man?” “Nature or Nurture?” “Is there life after death?” Roy Zimmerman asks - and more importantly, answers - a deeper, more pressing question: “What if the Beatles were Irish?” We believe you will find his answer both enlightening and completely amusing.

For the past ten years musicians and listeners have been gathering at The University of Mount Union’s Huston Brumbaugh Nature Center on the first Sunday of every month at 2:00 to share a few hours of music. Every session brings a new mix of players and singers. We have been known to play Celtic, folk, country, bluegrass, and even original songs that people bring to share. We have had accomplished players and beginners, lots of different instruments, young folks and old. All are welcome!
The nature center is a perfect place to play music together, whether we meet in the bird room, with the birds singing along in the background, or in the beautiful new outside covered patio in nicer weather. If you’ve never been to the nature center, it’s located about five miles south of Alliance on route 183.

It’s a wonderful place to visit with miles of hiking trails and many opportunities to participate in a variety of programs. We’d love to have you join us to share some music on the first Sunday of each month!

Why Join Our Songwriter Circle?
There are many reasons folks join our organization. They come to share creative ideas, to meet other writers or become inspired. Here’s what Terry Richardson had to say about being a member.
“I was a somewhat shy songwriter who was often scared to let anyone hear anything I had written because I had no-one to compare with or help me in my composition. After joining and participating in the Summit County Songwriter’s Circle, it gave me confidence to explore my creative capabilities. There were people from all walks of life and varying levels of musical experience who were willing to listen and to help critique and craft both lyrics and chordal progressions. I’m thinking overall, it gave me permission to explore all kinds of musical expression without setting limitations. In other words, it gave me much freedom to perform my own work."

This group of musicians have my heart. They have literally saved my sanity.
Glenn Peterhansen is a seasoned musician who knows how to write a song that spans the decades. His vocal talents put John Denver right in front of you when you close your eyes, and he sings of love and love lost like he knows exactly what your heart feels.
His bands have evolved through the decades. His first successful group was called Careless. Life happened and by the early 2000's they were no more.
Then he happened upon the Summit County Songwriters Circle where he met many talented individuals who inspired him to start a new band.
As most musicians know, it's difficult to find the right fit, as far as style, talent, and commitment. Glenn found this through many friendships and trials. The most devastating being the death of guitarist and close friend John Hutchens.
Since I had joined the band a year earlier to lend some background vocals, Glenn and I knew the music had to continue. New formations happened and it all finally fit.
The band calls our style happy pop songs. Listeners are reminded of the 60's legend Buddy Holly and, with the addition of our new lead guitarist Kurt Schlumberger, it's been said that there is a strong hint of Mark Knopfler of the 70's band Dire Straits. Crystal Mancine holds down the bass lines like she was born to do it and keeps the rhythm exactly where it needs to be.

If you are curious how all these sounds and styles fit together so perfectly keep reading to find out where and when you can witness the magic and more! Oh yeah, the band’s name. You can decide for yourself. The band plays their songs usually in the key of F or G. Or maybe it stands for the "Friends and Glenn", "Fun and Goodness", or as many guitarists have uttered, it can be about that G string that always breaks in the middle of a song! We will be performing at Musica in downtown Akron on Friday, August 11. The show will also feature popular blues and “scat man” Johnny G who will open the evening at 8pm. Young, energy filled artist Colin Schoff will keep us full of the music spirit after the EffanGee performance. You will be very glad you came to listen! CDs will also be available at the venue. Advance tickets: $8 Day of Show $10 All Ages. Under 21 pays additional $2 at the door

We meet next on August 7th at the B.P.O.E (Elks) at 2555 State Road in Cuyahoga Falls at 7:00 PM. If you are presenting a song please bring 20 copies for distribution to the other attendees. You do not need to be a member to attend a meeting or bring us a song.
